A new face cream arrives on the market almost every week with amazing claims.  They come with celebrity endorsements and independent clinical trials.  And I’ve tried them all.  Most turn out to be, well, fine, from the super-pricey Crème de la Mer to Boots’ surprise budget hit of this year, the £17 Protect and Perfect serum.  But a new potion has arrived in London and it’s causing quite a fuss.  It promises to: “Enhance skin texture, improve elasticity and may help improve the appearance of ageing and sun-damaged skin.”

It is SkinMedica’s TNS Recovery Complex and it has been described as “the biggest thing in dermatology in the next decade”.  Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey are fans.  Like so many new face creams, the technology behind it was developed first to treat wounds.  American dermatologists swear by it.

“I use the TNS Body Mist on all my lipo patients,” says Dr Greg Nikolaides, a leading dermatologist based in Texas.  “It really does help speed up the healing process.”

But does it work for everyday use, when your skin isn’t healing, it just needs looking after?  In clinical trials, 82 percent saw a marked improvement in skin texture.  Scientists say it is down to the key ingredients, “natural human growth factors”,

“Growth factors are the next big thing,” says Leslie Baumann MD, head of Cosmetic Dermatolgy at Miami University, who is usually sceptical about “magic ingredients”.  “TNS is a great first step, though better products will be coming out soon.  It works because it contains TGF-Beta, which helps skin make collagen.”

Other experts are less easily won over, “it will be great if this product does improve elasticity and boost collagen within the skin,” says Dr Susan Mayou, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic, “but where is the evidence?  Yes, the product has a great provenence, but I want to see its results reported in a dermatological journal first.”

So does it really work?  I am sufficiently convinced about TNS to switch from my favourite fix. Now only time will tell.

I met Dallas-based make-up artist Susan Posnick in late spring and am now completely won over to her capsule collection of natural mineral-based make-up, which incorporates a high sun protection factor. The core product, Colorflo, is a superfine, water-resistant, sweat-proof, preservative-free powder withSPF26, which gives a foundation finish as it warms on your skin. The minerals are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide plus skin-nourishing antioxidant vitamins A,C, E and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The cunning packaging incorporates and ultra-soft, goat hair brush to whisk on the product in a trice. I really didn't believe a powder could morph into a base, but it really does: a friend even used it successfully to cover up the redness of laser resurfacing.
